Met Gala 2021 kicked off in style as fashion’s biggest night in celebration of the Costume Institute’s newest exhibition, In America: A Lexicon of Fashion. Originally supposed to be held on the first Monday in May, this year’s gala was postponed to the evening of September 13 due to COVID-19. Celebrities across industries took to the Met Gala carpet to showcase their interpretation of the theme.
The carpet saw multiple embodiments of American style, be it through more prominent and flashy ensembles that paid an homage to the star-spangled motif or more discreet nods to the theme. Throughout the years, the Met Gala has hosted an abundance of iconically memorable outfits, and has become known as a more-is-more event for celebrities looking to flex their connections to the fashion industry. This year’s Met Gala was co-chaired by pop sensation Billie Eilish, critically-acclaimed actor Timothée Chalamet, global tennis star Naomi Osaka and American poet and activist Amanda Gorman.
Rihanna and A$AP Rocky made a fashionably late entrance, shutting down the carpet — as has become expected of the musician. Arriving to great anticipation, Rihanna commanded the room with a Balenciaga overcoat and a matching toque. Not one to shy away from show-stopping details, the black ruffles added more volume to the chic interpretation of the all-Americana style. The singer was joined by her boyfriend Rocky, who was dressed in a quilt-inspired look constructed by ERL. Underneath the multicolored cape was a sleek suit ensemble, matching Rihanna’s classic outfit.
